Congratulations to all the students who completed our 2023 Signals Game Academy!

During the Summer of 2023 we held our Signals Game Academy course, helping to train and inspire the next generation of British game makers, supporting talented and committed young people aged 16 – 18, to develop the knowledge and skills to make a career in the game industry a reality. Check out what they got up to in the video below.

The Signals Game Academy is an opportunity for young creatives interested in careers in the games industry to work individually or in teams and prototype ideas in a ‘game jam’ environment. Developing skills with support from our expert tutors; game developer Rachel Ambrose, creative technologist Emily Godden and Signals’ digital producer Frazer Merrick.

Throughout the week we welcomed a variety of industry professionals to speak about their experiences and offer advice and expertise to the students; Luke Hebblethwaite – Head of Games at BAFTA, Dom Shaw – Equality Diversity and Inclusion officer at UKIE, AJ Grand-Scrutton – CEO at Dlala Studios, Denzel Dome – Freelance Games Writer and Siobhan McDonnell – Immersive Producer at Singer Studios.

After a jam packed week of programming, animating, sound designing and bug-fixing – we welcomed our participants friends and families to the showcase event where we celebrated their fantastic games, and took great pleasure in playing everyones projects.

The whole week was an overwhelming success, with fantastic feedback from participants, parents and partner organisations. Evaluation data from participants showed the project impacted them in two main ways; an increase in self-confidence and an increase in understanding of career paths. One participated said:

Now I know there’s a lot of places I can go to, and a lot of things I can do. So even if things don’t go the way they’re planned they’ll still go down a path which will lead me to a good career.

We’re very pleased to announce that Signals Game Academy will return in Summer 2024, with applications opening in Spring 2024.
